Do czego służyć może płonący kotek... Nie jest tak, że najbardziej łatwopalnym
środowiskiem obfitującym w tragiczne skutki są suche
zarośla śródziemnomorskie czy eukaliptusowe lasy
Australii. To prawda, że ogień pożera błyskawicznie
suche krzewy, a powietrze lasów australijskich zawiera
olejki eteryczne podnoszące łatwopalność lasu. Ale
przyroda łatwo sobie radzi z pożarami, a nawet wiele
gatunków roślin bez ognia ani rusz, muszą przejść
przez pożogę, by się namnażać.
W takim jak wyżej środowisku, a
żyje w slumsach wiele milionów ludzi, byle nieostrożność
z kuchenką gazową czy naftową, porzucona nieostrożnie
zapałka, obalona świeca czy kaganek wywołuje pożar ogarniający
setki 'domostw'. Wody do gaszenia pożaru nie ma, straż
nie przedrze się przez slumsy, gdzie przecież ulic
nawet nie ma. W ten sposób ofiarą pożogi padają całe
dzielnice. The possible uses of a burning cat… The most readily ignitable environments, with the most tragic outcomes, are not the dry Mediterranean brushwoods, nor the eucalyptus forests of Australia. It is, of course, true that fire devours such brushwood with lightning speed, and the atmosphere of the Australian forests contains essential oils which increase the flammability of the trees. But nature can cope with fires, and many species of plant are adapted to fire to such an extend that they must undergo the ordeal of fire in order to germinate. No, the most readily flammable environment, with the greatest number of victims and the greatest losses, are the slums of all third-world countries in every continent. In such an environment as shown above, and millions of people live in such, the slightest carelessness with a gas or kerosene cooker, a carelessly dropped match, a candle or torch knocked over, will start a blaze which soon envelops hundreds of ‘homes’. There is no water to fight the blaze, and the fire brigade cannot penetrate the slum where there are no streets. In this manner entire districts can be engulfed. It is these districts which become most frequently and crazily ‘developed‘ by the newcomers from the Indian, Peruvian, Pakistani or Filipino province. However the land is usually the property of the criminal underworld, or, simply, the government. Building sites are in great demand by the dark oligarchies which, by any means, endeavour to expel the aborigines to anywhere. Legal procedures are costly and lengthy, and the capital value of the land keeps increasing without producing income. And this is where a cat, or rat, comes in useful. The cat is soused in petrol, ignited, and let loose. Before it expires, it succeeds in setting fire to dozens slum dwellings. A dog is not as good for this, for it does not endure pain for as long. After the wave of conflagration, bulldozers are brought in, the ground is levelled, and construction begins of beautiful skyscrapers, hotels, commercial centres. In this way one can by-pass the complicated legal expulsion procedures and progress can boldly enter the suburbia. Manila has a sad reputation for this procedure, which is known as the ‘hot clearance’. I shall not illustrate this with a photograph of a burning cat or rat.
