Maria van der Linden
An unforgettable journey
(1992)

Preface

The fixed mosaic of one's destiny
Is filled by tiny blocks of events.
Charles Reich

Over the years I have been invited to address several clubs and school assemblies in Hawke's Bay to speak about my personal experiences in life. My decision to write this book was a response to numerous requests.

The family history contained in this book is interwoven with poignant world events occurring between 1938 and 1992. Profound changes which have taken place in New Zealand, especially since 1947, have been included and have given this publication a wider perspective.

Reality for me Is the present, looking back to the past. The past is known: the future is merely a dream, which may or may not be realised.

After 45 years in New Zealand I feel as if I am a New Zealander. Our family, born here, belongs to New Zealand. Although we are the citizens of this land we are still proud of the European cultural heritage derived from our ancestors in my native Poland, and in Holland, where my husband was born. I believe that our descend-ants, the first and second generation New Zealanders, have been enriched by this cultural heritage. Our heritage is interwoven with our New Zealand descendants and our experiences in this country since the end of World War II. This heritage of An Unforgettable Journey belongs to posterity in New Zealand and to the countries of our origin, Poland and Holland.
